The dealer is the person who is in charge of dealing the cards. The dealer’s button, or buck, is a white plastic disk. Generally, the first person to receive a card from the shuffled deck becomes the initial dealer. During a game, the player in the middle is considered the active player. He or she may place a bet into the center pot or call another player’s bet.
After the first two rounds, a third round of betting is held. This round is called the turn. All the other players have the opportunity to see the hand of the dealer. Once all the players are revealed, the player who has the best hand, as determined by the odds, wins the game. A player who has the second-best hand can also win the pot.
When a player’s hand is revealed, he or she can discard up to three cards. A player can then either replace the cards or bet. Some players bluff by bets that they have the best hand.
After the final betting round, a showdown occurs. When more than one player remains, the hand of the player who has the highest card breaks a tie.
